  • The recipe calls for both soy sauce and dark soy sauce, which contribute to the depth of flavor.

Tips from Cook! Stacey Cook’s video

Ingredients

Steps

  1. 1

Cut the green onions in half to separate the white and green parts, then cut each part into 2-inch sections. Keep them separate.

  2. 2

Crush the garlic cloves with a knife and finely mince them.

  3. 3

Cut the onion into large strips and separate the layers.

  4. 4

Slice the beef against the grain into average thickness pieces.

  5. 5

Marinate the beef with soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, baking soda, and corn starch. Mix well, then add a little oil and sesame oil.

  6. 6

Preheat a pan over medium-high heat and add a little oil.

  7. 7

Add the white part of the green onion and onion to the hot pan. Stir fry until the raw taste is gone, seasoning with a little sugar and salt. Remove from the pan once ready.

  8. 8

Add more oil to the pan and then add the beef, spreading it out. Let it pan fry without stirring until the bottom is slightly brown.

  9. 9

Stir the beef and add the minced garlic. Stir fry until the beef is about 70% done.

  10. 10

Add cooking wine to the edge of the pan to release its aroma, then add more dark soy sauce and oyster sauce. Mix well.

  11. 11

Add plain water to the pan and let the sauce thicken. Add crushed black pepper and return the onions to the pan. Stir to combine everything.

Heads up — we had to guess a little:

  • The quantity for black pepper is inferred as 'to taste' based on common cooking practices.
